    This peculiar character used to mean “plant of the jute family” long time ago. However, this meaning is no longer in use. Instead, it is now used as an emoticon (you can imagine why it was adopted as an emoticon just by looking at it) meaning embarrassed, sad, depressed or frustrated.

    It's the Chinese version of  :-(
